Convenções internacionais ou regionais

A Nigéria não é membro da International Whaling Commission (Comissão Baleeira Internacional). No entanto, é membro/signatária das seguintes convenções internacionais ou regionais relacionadas com a conservação de cetáceos:

• Convention on Migratory Species (Convenção sobre a Conservação das Espécies Migradoras da Fauna Selvagem), desde 1987
• The Abidjan convention (Convenção de Abidjan)

Observações confirmadas

Olakunle and Akanbi (2014) relataram três avistamentos de S. teuszii na região oeste da Nigéria, com um total de 33 indivíduos, mas estes avistamentos não só não estão detalhadamente documentados, como não são suportados por fotografias. Van Waerebeek et al. (2017) referem que “A ausência geral de registos na Nigéria pode ser atribuída à falta de empenho numa observação científica.” Além disso, Van Waerebeek et al (2017) também reportam a morte de, pelo menos, três golfinhos da espécie Sousa teuszii em redes de emalhar artesanais ao largo da Ilha de Brass, na Nigéria, em 2011 e 2012.

Ameaças e tendências

Apesar de existirem evidências recentes de caça direta de golfinhos, já em 2008-2009, e de ter sido relatada captura acessória em redes de emalhar artesanais, em 2011 e em 2012 (Uwagbae and Van Waerebeeek em 2010 e Van Waerebeek et al em 2017), não existem estimativas de abundância, nem informações detalhadas sobre ameaças neste país.
