Abstract

During the years 1971 to 1975, ten species of Cetacea have been recorded along the coasts of Mauritanie: Sousa teuzsii, Steno bredanensis, Stenella longirostris, Delphinus delphis, Tursiops truncatus, Globicephala melaena, Orcinus orca, Grampus griseus, Phocoena phocoena, and, Balaenoptera physalus. The northern limit of range seems to be about 20°N for S. teuzsii and 16°15’N for S. longirostris. It is to be noticed the particulary large specimens of P. phocoena found in this area, and frequent sightings of O. orca. The main feature of this fauna is a mixing of tropical and tempered ones to be related to cold waters areas connected with “upwelling” effect.
